Nose tackle in good hands with McLendon

Posted by Teresa Varley on August 12, 2012 – 1:00 pm

Nose tackle Steve McLendon looked solid against the Eagles, sacking quarterback Michael Vick. Sacking Vick is a challenge, but McLendon was able to do it pulling him down with just one hand.

“These are some big hands,” said McLendon outside the team’s cafeteria at St. Vincent College. “If I get them on you I think you are coming down. That is Michael Vick, everyone wants the chance to sack him and I had the opportunity and took advantage of it.”

Overall McLendon seemed pleased with his starting performance, but knows he has a lot of work to do.

“There are some things I can learn from and try to get better,” said McLendon. “I want to make sure I am running to the ball, quicker hands, and knowing my opponent better.”

He said defensive line coach John Mitchell was okay with the way he played, but he too sees room for improvement.

“He said it’s something you can grow from, you can learn from,” said McLendon. “He told me I am getting better, but you need to work on the little things. That is I what I take to practice with me and work on the little things.”

McLendon got the start as nose tackle Casey Hampton is still on the PUP list with a knee injury. McLendon is a different body type than Hampton, not the big guy that everyone is used to in the middle but still very effective.
“He is more powerful than I am,” said McLendon. “He is strong and I am strong, but he is more powerful. I am just going to use what I have, quickness and strength.

“Everyone thinks the typical nose tackle is heavy and a first and second down guy. I can play first, second and third down. I play in our nickel package. That is how I got my sack. I just play within the defense, execute my technique and assignment and everything turned out for the best.”

McLendon pumped for preseason

Posted by Teresa Varley on August 7, 2012 – 2:09 pm

Nose tackle Steve McLendon is pumped for the preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night, ready to finally go against someone other than his Steelers teammates.

“It’s going to be exciting for me and the other guys,” said McLendon. “We have been seeing our teammates the last two weeks. Going out and hitting someone else is going to be fun.

“It’s going to be exciting. I am excited about the opportunity and I am going to take advantage of it.”

McLendon knows this will be the perfect chance for him to show what he can do with Casey Hampton still sidelined.
“I just want to show them I can get the job done, showcase my talent, play hard and smart,” said McLendon. “I feel more comfortable in the defense. It takes time in the defense. It’s hard to start or play much your first year. All I am going to do is play fast, hard and smart.”

McLendon taking advantage of opportunity

Posted by Teresa Varley on August 5, 2012 – 6:09 pm

As Casey Hampton continues to comeback from a knee injury that has him on the PUP list, third-year nose tackle Steve McLendon continues to work his tail off to prove he can step in if called upon.

“I am taking advantage of it every day,” said McLendon of getting the extra looks in practice. “One day at a time, one snap at a time, one play at a time. The only thing I can do is rise to the occasion.

“The coaches expect big things out of me and I expect big things out of myself. I look at it as an opportunity for a guy like myself to grow and be a great player in the future.”

So far McLendon is proving he can go at it with the big boys up front, even though he lacks the size for a prototypical nose tackle, but he also knows there is room for improvement.

“I am delivering some, but there is a lot of work to be done,” said McLendon. “I am a work in progress right now. Hopefully by the first preseason game, the end of the preseason, the first regular season game, I will be ready to contribute to the team no matter what my role is.”

And if injuries dictate that role is a starter, he will be ready.

“I am always ready to be a starter,” said McLendon. “I practice every day, go into every practice like I am a starter. I go into every practice like a starter because you never know when your name is going to be called.”

McLendon back-up at NT

Posted by Teresa Varley on November 22, 2011 – 12:32 pm

Coach Mike Tomlin was asked about the play of back-up nose tackle Steve McLendon, and while his answer was just one word – “solid” – he did also confirm that McLendon is Casey Hampton’s back-up at the position.

“He is at this juncture,” said Tomlin.
