Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney and former Pirates owner Kevin McClatchy co-chaired the 16th Annual “Gala Pittsburgh Sports Night” at Heinz Field on Thursday night in conjunction with the North Side Friends and Neighbors and Diocese of Pittsburgh Bishop David Zubik.

The annual event benefits Northside Catholic School, providing assistance to help those unable to meet the financial requirements for a Catholic education and to aid the school’s operation.

Pennsylvania Congressman Michael Doyle and Dr. Robert Paserba, Secretary for Catholic Education for the Diocese of Pittsburgh were honored as the 2013 North Side Hall of Fame Awardees.

Steelers’ players, including Jerricho Cotchery, Jonathan Dwyer, Bruce Gradkowski and Derek Moye, along with Steelers and Pirates alumni and local college athletes, were on hand signing autographs and meet guests. A silent and live auction also took place, highlighted a trip to see the Steelers play at Baltimore and a chance to throw out the first pitch at a Pirates game.

Roethlisberger receives law enforcement award

Posted by Teresa Varley on October 25, 2013 – 2:10 pm

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was honored on Friday afternoon at the 13th Annual Amen Corner Senator John Heinz Law Enforcement Awards Luncheon at the Sheraton Hotel at Station Square.

Roethlisberger became the first non-law enforcement individual to be honored by the Amen Corner, receiving the award for his contribution to K-9 units of police and fire departments in the Pittsburgh area and throughout the country through his foundation.

“To be the first one outside of law enforcement to win this award it’s an awesome honor,” said Roethlisberger. “The award means a lot to my foundation.”

The luncheon annually honors a select group of police officers for their heroic actions, with 10 officers from the Western Pennsylvania area honored this year. Each of the law enforcement officers will receive a statuette, modeled after the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial near Heinz Field.

Ward talks Ironman

Posted by Teresa Varley on October 24, 2013 – 7:41 am

Former Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward recently completed the Kona Ironman Triathlon, finishing in 13 hours, 8 minutes and 15 seconds. Ward spoke with NFL Evolution about the experience. A few of his comments are below and the full interview can be viewed at Hines Ward Ironman.

How is your body feeling after completing the Kona Ironman Triathlon almost two weeks ago?
I’m still a little sore. I’m back to running. I just ran six miles yesterday. It was the first time that I ran since the triathlon. I worked the Notre Dame (versus USC game) last Saturday (for NBC) and got on the elliptical machine that morning. That was really the first time that I actually did any (exercise since Kona), but it took me a while to recover. There’s no question about that.

What was it that made you try endurance sports and when did you make that decision to compete in Kona?
My agent … presented an opportunity from “Got Chocolate Milk,” which I already represented. I’ve done a milk mustache ad before. The opportunity presented itself for me to participate in the Ironman World Championships out in Kona with their help. At the time I was probably naïve and stupid, really not knowing what goes into an Ironman and becoming an endurance athlete. I think so many people out there don’t know what it takes to do a triathlon. It’s a grueling sport and it definitely earned my respect going into it. I was kind of dumb-founded by really not knowing how long a 2.4 mile swim and how long a 112-mile bike ride would take. I kind of knew about a marathon, but to do it all in one day is grueling. Now, having done it and finished the Ironman in Kona, I just get a newfound respect for all of the triathletes out there because I know what they’re going through.

There are shorter lengths of triathlons — sprint, Olympic and half Ironman. Did you participate in any of those while training for Kona?
I did one of each. I really just started training in February, so it was less than eight months. I did a sprint triathlon in San Diego in early March. I did an Olympic down in St. Petersburg, Fla. And then I did a half Ironman in Kansas during the summer. I did one of everything to get kind of a simulation of what Kona was going to be like. Even while I was in Kona, it was still overwhelming. Luckily for me, I got a celebrity exemption to get in (Kona). … But to be around all of the pros from every age group, it was overwhelming. But at the same time it was great to be on the course with some of the greatest endurance athletes from all over the world.

Steelers make a wish come true

Posted by Teresa Varley on October 18, 2013 – 3:08 pm

MakeAWishWoodley
It’s a special weekend for 18-year old Daniel Fraley from Hermitage, Pa., who attended Steelers practice on Friday through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Fraley’s wish was to meet players and go to a game, which he will do on Sunday when the Steelers host the Baltimore Ravens at Heinz Field.

Fraley got to meet many of the players, including his favorite, linebacker LaMarr Woodley, who spent time talking with him near the end of practice and afterwards.

“He told me what they were doing out there,” said Fraley, who has muscular dystrophy. “It was cool having him come over and talk to me then. He is a good player. He is a good guy.”

Woodley said he was touched that meeting him was part of Fraley’s wish and he had a good time hanging out with him at practice.

“I came over during our last period when I wasn’t in there, spent some time with him while he was watching practice,” said Woodley. “I was telling him what was going on, who was out there on the field. He already knew, though. He knows his stuff.

“It’s a good feeling to do this. You are making an impact on people’s lives.”

Planes, trains and automobiles in London

Posted by Teresa Varley on September 27, 2013 – 4:38 pm

London – The Steelers travels to London included, well planes, trains and automobiles … or at least buses (or coaches as they are referred to here in London.

The team flew seven hours on a Virgin Atlantic flight from Pittsburgh to London’s Gatwick Airport. It was then on to an express train from Gatwick to London, where everyone got on “coaches” and headed to the hotel.

It was an interesting trip to say the least, but kudos to the London host committee from making it smooth sailing.

Getting away a good thing

Posted by Teresa Varley on September 26, 2013 – 2:27 pm

While many are concerned about the Steelers facing distractions when they arrive in London, safety Ryan Clark thinks they will be getting away from the distractions that come with being an 0-3 team.

“I think it’s good to get away,” said Clark. “I don’t think it will be a distraction in a bad way because of the way Coach (Mike) Tomlin handles it. I think it will be a distraction in a good way because it gets us away from every day hearing what’s going on with us.

“We can get away, spend time together as a team, get some of the chemistry and fellowship that you lose once the offense and defense go into meetings, you study separate. It gives us the opportunity to just play football and try to win the game. That’s become our focus this week.”

Mesko shares insight on playing at Wembley

Posted by Teresa Varley on September 26, 2013 – 2:19 pm

Punter Zoltan Mesko knows what it’s like to play in London as the New England Patriots were one of the teams that took part in the International Series last year when he was with them. Mesko shared some stories with the players and coaches about what to expect.

“I just filled them in on a couple of facts,” said Mesko. “I don’t think there is a secret to it. The same dimensions are there as we have here. It’s just that it’s in the 80,000 people range and I’m sure it’s going to be a full house. It’s going to be a nice environment for us to play in and we are excited to prepare for a win.

“There is a lot of excitement. The NFL does a great job of putting on this event. There are a lot of jerseys besides the two teams that will be playing on Sunday. It’s an International love for the sport of football. It’s a pretty cool environment. I think both teams will be getting equal cheers.”

Kendrek Tarver couldn’t stand still, so excited to be watching the Steelers practice on Friday afternoon and see his favorite player Troy Polamalu in person.

Tarver, who is from Baltimore, Maryland, attended practice and will be at Sunday night’s game against the Bears as a part of the Steelers commitment to Make-A-Wish. Tarver has Muscular Dystrophy, something he was born with but showed up when he was around five years old.

“This is good to make him happy, let him meet people he plays on Madden and watches on television,” said his mother Michelle Tarver. “It’s just exciting. It fills my heart that he is happy and got to do something he wanted to do.”

Miller “feels pretty good” after practice

Posted by Teresa Varley on September 18, 2013 – 9:34 pm

As promised tight end Heath Miller was a full participant in practice on Wednesday, but his status for Sunday night’s game against the Chicago Bears has yet to be determined.

“We’ll see,” said Miller. “We’ll see how it feels in the morning and try to keep pushing it through the week and see how it holds up. It feels pretty good right now. I think today was a good day. We’ll see how it feels tomorrow.”

Miller practiced in a limited role last week, but Wednesday was the first time he went full tilt in practice.

“We’ll see how it responds,” said Miller. “After a couple of days in a row we’ll see where we are at. I am encouraged by the way I felt today. We’ll just see how the knee reacts. Hopefully it will hold up and we will have a positive week.”
