Clowney shows off his speed

Posted by Teresa Varley on February 24, 2014 – 12:33 pm

Defensive linemen are getting their turn at the NFL Scouting Combine on Monday.

South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney put on a performance with an unofficial time of 4.47 in the 40-yard dash. When the official results came in his time was just as impressive, with an official 4.53 in the 40. It was the sixth fastest 40-time for a defensive lineman in the last 10 years.

Bloomsburg’s Larry Webster had a 4.58, while Shepherd’s Howard Jones had a 4.6 and Texas’ Jackson Jeffcoat a 4.63.

Pitt’s Aaron Donald ran a 4.68, as did Louisville’s Marcus Smith. Rounding out the top 10 in the 40 were Virginia Tech’s James Gayle (4.70), Arkansas’ Chris Smith (4.71), North Carolina’s Kareem Martin (4.72) and Ball State’s Jonathan Newsome (4.73).

Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney and former Pirates owner Kevin McClatchy co-chaired the 16th Annual “Gala Pittsburgh Sports Night” at Heinz Field on Thursday night in conjunction with the North Side Friends and Neighbors and Diocese of Pittsburgh Bishop David Zubik.

The annual event benefits Northside Catholic School, providing assistance to help those unable to meet the financial requirements for a Catholic education and to aid the school’s operation.

Pennsylvania Congressman Michael Doyle and Dr. Robert Paserba, Secretary for Catholic Education for the Diocese of Pittsburgh were honored as the 2013 North Side Hall of Fame Awardees.

Steelers’ players, including Jerricho Cotchery, Jonathan Dwyer, Bruce Gradkowski and Derek Moye, along with Steelers and Pirates alumni and local college athletes, were on hand signing autographs and meet guests. A silent and live auction also took place, highlighted a trip to see the Steelers play at Baltimore and a chance to throw out the first pitch at a Pirates game.

Rooney on hand to honor Malone

David Malone, the President and CEO of Gateway Financial, was honored as the 2013 Thieman Awardee at the Magic of Mentoring Recognition event held at Heinz Field on Thursday night.

This event highlights mentoring and the 140 programs working to promote quality mentoring that supports youth in the community.

Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney, the founding chairman of the Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania, and safety Will Allen were on hand as Malone was honored.

“Most people would be happy just to own and operate an NFL franchise that has become the envy of every other sports franchise in the world,” said Malone. “Dan has decided that wasn’t enough and has to be involved in virtually everything in the community. Look at what he did with the Mentoring Partnership and United Way. We have all really benefitted from his involvement.”

Malone thanked the mentors in his life during his speech, and also shared a story that he once read that he related to mentoring, and the fact that what mentors do with today’s youth might not show until they become adults.

“If you plant the Chinese bamboo today and you water it and the next growing season you see nothing come out of the ground,” said Malone. “You keep watering it and for four years you see nothing happening. In the fifth year the bamboo grows 80 feet up in the air. The point is the work that they do sometimes is unrewarded for a long time. But what that bamboo was doing while it was dormant was growing its roots 80 feet into the ground so it could shoot up into the air.”

Ward talks Ironman

Posted by Teresa Varley on October 24, 2013 – 7:41 am

Former Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward recently completed the Kona Ironman Triathlon, finishing in 13 hours, 8 minutes and 15 seconds. Ward spoke with NFL Evolution about the experience. A few of his comments are below and the full interview can be viewed at Hines Ward Ironman.

How is your body feeling after completing the Kona Ironman Triathlon almost two weeks ago?
I’m still a little sore. I’m back to running. I just ran six miles yesterday. It was the first time that I ran since the triathlon. I worked the Notre Dame (versus USC game) last Saturday (for NBC) and got on the elliptical machine that morning. That was really the first time that I actually did any (exercise since Kona), but it took me a while to recover. There’s no question about that.

What was it that made you try endurance sports and when did you make that decision to compete in Kona?
My agent … presented an opportunity from “Got Chocolate Milk,” which I already represented. I’ve done a milk mustache ad before. The opportunity presented itself for me to participate in the Ironman World Championships out in Kona with their help. At the time I was probably naïve and stupid, really not knowing what goes into an Ironman and becoming an endurance athlete. I think so many people out there don’t know what it takes to do a triathlon. It’s a grueling sport and it definitely earned my respect going into it. I was kind of dumb-founded by really not knowing how long a 2.4 mile swim and how long a 112-mile bike ride would take. I kind of knew about a marathon, but to do it all in one day is grueling. Now, having done it and finished the Ironman in Kona, I just get a newfound respect for all of the triathletes out there because I know what they’re going through.

There are shorter lengths of triathlons — sprint, Olympic and half Ironman. Did you participate in any of those while training for Kona?
I did one of each. I really just started training in February, so it was less than eight months. I did a sprint triathlon in San Diego in early March. I did an Olympic down in St. Petersburg, Fla. And then I did a half Ironman in Kansas during the summer. I did one of everything to get kind of a simulation of what Kona was going to be like. Even while I was in Kona, it was still overwhelming. Luckily for me, I got a celebrity exemption to get in (Kona). … But to be around all of the pros from every age group, it was overwhelming. But at the same time it was great to be on the course with some of the greatest endurance athletes from all over the world.

Steelers make a wish come true

Posted by Teresa Varley on October 18, 2013 – 3:08 pm

MakeAWishWoodley
It’s a special weekend for 18-year old Daniel Fraley from Hermitage, Pa., who attended Steelers practice on Friday through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Fraley’s wish was to meet players and go to a game, which he will do on Sunday when the Steelers host the Baltimore Ravens at Heinz Field.

Fraley got to meet many of the players, including his favorite, linebacker LaMarr Woodley, who spent time talking with him near the end of practice and afterwards.

“He told me what they were doing out there,” said Fraley, who has muscular dystrophy. “It was cool having him come over and talk to me then. He is a good player. He is a good guy.”

Woodley said he was touched that meeting him was part of Fraley’s wish and he had a good time hanging out with him at practice.

“I came over during our last period when I wasn’t in there, spent some time with him while he was watching practice,” said Woodley. “I was telling him what was going on, who was out there on the field. He already knew, though. He knows his stuff.

“It’s a good feeling to do this. You are making an impact on people’s lives.”

Steelers help to tackle hunger

Posted by Teresa Varley on October 16, 2013 – 3:09 pm

Steelers’ fans can do their part to help those less fortunate by donating to the Annual Steelers Food Drive at Heinz Field this Sunday when the Steelers host the Baltimore Ravens.

Fans are encouraged to bring nutritious non-perishable food and grocery items to donate for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Fans can also make cash donations.

Volunteers will be stationed at all gates, as well as Stage AE, and at the Food Bank truck on General Robinson Street from 1 p.m. until shortly after kickoff. Giant Eagle will match the donations pound for pound.

Some of the items fans are encouraged to bring coincided with the NFL’s Play 60 campaign, which encourages healthy eating. The most needed items are: raisin snack packs, dried fruits, fruit cups, 100 percent juice boxes, non-chocolate granola bars, low-sugar cereal, canned tuna (water-packed), sunflower seeds, peanuts and mixed nuts, and trail mix. Seasonal items are also welcome: canned pumpkin or yams, boxed mashed potatoes or stuffing mix, etc., along with paper products, personal care items, diapers (baby and adult). Bring nonperishable items only and no glass containers.

Fans that aren’t able to attend the game can donate to the Steelers Virtual Food Drive at www.pittsburghfoodbank.org/steelers.

Ward completes Ironman competition

Posted by Teresa Varley on October 13, 2013 – 7:23 am

When former Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward sets his mind to do something, you can be sure he is going to see it through to the end, even if it is the most grueling sporting event in existence.

And he did just that on Saturday, finishing the 2013 Ironman World Championship Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii in 13 hours, eight minutes and 15 seconds. In addition, UPMC and Steelers’ neurosurgeon Dr. Joseph Maroon completed his ninth Ironman in 16 hours, three minutes, and 48 seconds.

The Ironman, a 140.6 mile swim, bike and run triathlon is known as the “Super Bowl” of triathlon, an event only the best of the best normally participate in. Ward finished the 2.4 mile ocean swim in 1:20:01, while completing the 112 mile bike portion in 6:21:12. Ward completed the Ironman competition finishing the 26.2 mile race in 5:12:56.

Ward competed as a part of BECOME ONE, sponsored by Got Chocolate Milk, pushing himself to limits he didn’t know was possible.

“People ask why I want to put my body through the pain,” said Ward in advance of the Ironman. “But it’s a sense of satisfaction if I can cross that finish line. What a great accomplishment that would be.

“When I get at the starting line I know I am not going to win the race, but it’s all about finishing.”

Ward did what he set out to do, he finished.
