Roethlisberger will start vs. Chargers

Posted by Teresa Varley on December 6, 2012 – 3:29 pm

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will start against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, returning to action after missing the last three games with a shoulder injury.

Roethlisberger practiced for the second straight day on Thursday, and Coach Mike Tomlin was comfortable enough with what he saw to say Roethlisberger will start this week.

“He has been above the line in all areas,” said Tomlin following Thursday’s practice. “Really, the only question we can’t answer is taking a hit. Obviously that will be answered in the stadium on Sunday.

“I am extremely comfortable with his ability to work the field both vertically and horizontally. He has great velocity on his ball. We’re ready to go.”

Glad to hear Ben’s ready to play, but I think charlie should start and Ben continue getting healthy for the playoffs. YES-I’m optimistic-we’re going!

Is he really ready? After last year’s debacle, I’m not 100 percent sure he should come back yet. Charlie & Co. could handle SD… assuming everyone holds on to the ball. Another week, then use that last game to shake off the rust. Likely will have to go to Denver again for the playoffs and to match Manning (without Clark in the secondary) will be a serious challenge. Thoughts?

Keep this man healthy.. we saw what happens in the playoffs with an injured Ben Roethlisberger.

Ben we missed you!! lets kick Chargers!!!!

I hope he’s fine. But I haven’t forgotten what happened at the end of last year when he wanted to be a hero and played horribly with a bad leg. We had a better shot of winning with him on the bench that game.

I agree with Molly. If they don’t play down to the Chargers level like they did the Chiefs Batch can handle this easy. He beat a better team in the ravens last week. Keep Ben healthy. GO STEELERS!!!!!!!!

I think Tomlin is a good enough coach to have learned from the mistake a year ago. Ben has to be ready to go if they are starting him especially with the way Batch played last week. if there was any doubt about his readiness Tomlin would ere on the side of caution. And I think the season could very well play out with us winning the division and the Ravens out of the playoffs. Their schedule is difficult down the stretch.

We’ve lost to several teams we should have defeated. It’s too late in the season to underestimate any opponent. They must all be playoff games now.

The Chargers could have helped us a lot, but they let games to the Ravens and Bengals slip through their fingers. Good luck to us.

i think we should err on the side of caution, and start batch. if ben gets hurt how do are playoff chances look then?

Big Ben, making Big mistake,, Yes,, all the games are important and they may have to win out to make the playoffs. But Charlie is capable given a clean pocket. We need Ben one hundred percent healthy and really,, the Cinci game is the one that is the MOST important. I dont think he should start this weekend.

Ben’s going to be a little rusty. I think it’s great that he’ll have this home game to shake it off. It’s likely he can make some mistakes against the chargers and still come away with the W. Hopefully the O-line will play this week that way they did at M&T and the defense will be in BEAST mode as always.

Now we need Ike and Lamarr to heal up.

Separated shoulders and ribs do not heal in 3 weeks. Tomlin is making a big mistake. I think Charley should start and if he gets in trouble, then put Ben in. Ben does not know how to not take a hit. That is not a knock on him. It is just his desire to always make a play. One good hit and he might be out the rest of the year. No play offs then.

Welcome back BIG BEN. here comes #7, 7 rings.

Sounds too much like deja vu, i.e. last year. There doesnt’ seem to be any substantial reason for starting Ben in this game. Let him heal and rest another week. Charlie can beat these guys as long as the rest of the team is with him, as they seem to be right now.

Welcome back,Ben!!! Missed watching you play on the girdiron,Big guy!!!

I agree – I think Big Ben should sit this one out, and rest up for another week, or at least only be brought into the game if the Chargers are kicking our butts!

  39. By Danny in TEC on Dec 6, 2012 | Reply

OK… Ben should start… Steelers should run up a nice sized score where they can maybe sit Ben down in the late 3rd quarter… that should be the game plan. Charlie can play the rest of the game and not risk Ben. Let’s not be over confident vs. SD, they always seem to play extra tough against Pittsburgh… Go Steelers! (All the way from Mexico).

this is a mistake.. there is no reason to start ben against a 4&8 team.. he should rest one more week.. batch can handle the bolts
