Steelers make changes to depth chart

Posted by Teresa Varley on November 27, 2012 – 12:00 pm

The Steelers depth chart took on a new look on Tuesday with Jonathan Dwyer now listed as the first-team running back. Isaac Redman is listed as his backup, while former starter Rashard Mendenhall is listed as the team’s third back.

Dwyer is the Steelers leading rusher with 98 carries for 429 yards, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Redman has 87 carries for 307 yards and two touchdowns, while Mendenhall has 34 carries for 113 yards.

“Jonathan Dwyer is going to start for us,” said Tomlin. “He has been consistently the most productive guy. I think we’ve got a large enough body of work to identify that at this point. We’ve been working at less than ideal circumstances with the rotation and shuffling those guys due to health and lack of production. But over the course of the last several weeks it is obvious he is healthy and he is the most productive of the group.

“He will start for us and get the bulk of the carries. The other guys will supplement him in some form or fashion based on situation and how we formulate a game plan.”

In addition, at wide receiver it now has either Mike Wallace or Emmanuel Sanders starting on the one side, with Antonio Brown still listed as the other starter when he returns healthy. Sanders had five receptions for 75 yards in last week’s 20-13 loss to the Cleveland Browns, while Wallace had just one catch for nine yards.

Tomlin said situations will determine who will start there, and that he has not seen any lack of effort from Wallace.

“Mike was frustrated on Sunday and rightfully so,” said Tomlin. “He is not producing in the manner he would like to or we would like him to. It’s a function of a lot of things. He is going to be committed to continuing to work and we are committed to that as well.”

Thanks for finally seeing what all of us do, that Dwyer is your #1 running back.

It has appeared to me that Wallace does not have his head in the game and he does not want to be a Steeler. He has dropped more passes than I can count and his effort going after balls is weak. All of this after a hold out for a bigger contract. Now you see why he didn’t get that contract. If you get your head in the game the Steelers certainly give you a good offer and make you a rich man.

I think we need to cut ties with Mendenhall after this year. Just not durable enough for what he is paid. Got to move on which is what it looks like the Steelers are rightfully doing.

Wallace does look as if he is lacking intensity. maybe he is discruntled. If so see ya and sign a new receiver. Great speed and talent but you got to pull your weight.

first let me say i just love the fact mike wallace is a steeler . now with that said , it seems like everytime wallace has to cross the middle and catch the ball he either fumbles or juggles or flat out doesnt catch the ball ! now he does take the top off a defence but you cant throw the ball deep on every play and it looks like to me thats all he is willing to do ! if he catches a screen he doesnt run hard and he goes out of bounds way to soon . i think and this is my opinion , if he wants the kind of money that he’s asking for to stay in pittsburg he has to be more consistant and has to do more ! the great ones find a way to get open regardless who’s at QB !

Wallace looked out of sorts Sunday. It was like he expected the passes to be over the defenders. I’m sure it’s a product of different QB, but he could have come back to ball some.

Good move….give more looks to Heath. He’ll get the job done.

A good move at this point in the season, Dwyer is just performing to the level needed right now. Mendy and Redman are both excellent players just not finding the way to gain yardage. Rainey looks good just young and a specialty player.

Mike Wallace looks like he is trying, yes he held out but he jumped right in with both feet and produced. Every receiver drops passes, but the ball is put into positions alot of the time with very low probabability for coompletion.

Over all the team looks good there is just too many moving parts at key positions to establish continuity and it shows.

Finally, we are alll seeing the same signs. Dont get me wrong, I love Mike and Mendy, but production from both has been weak. I’ve been a steelers fan my whole life, and seen multiple receivers and backs come and go. Some to soon and some to fast, but what I do know, is if we want to win games, we all have to be focused and determined. We are always told your only as strong as your weakest link. Regardless of how quick or your ability, you must be focused or I could pick out 10 more like you. So Im challenging you (Mike and Mendy) show me why you are a steeler. Show me that steeler pride and commitment to 100. Cause I know you both got it. And I got your backs. BTW I cant really afford tickets but Id love some. LOL

I have had a problem with Haley’s play calling in most games this year. Maybe you can’t throw it deep to Wallace every play, but I guarantee if you do it several times a game you’ll get a touchdown or a long penalty, because he can outrun all others in the nfl, not to mention he will back those guys off the line of scrimmage. Secondly, if Haley had stuck to the run against Baltimore they would have won that game. Instead he kept going to the pass with a quarterback that did not belong in the game after the first drive. Sunday was all on the players. I have some serious questions about the balls the Steelers were using. I’m thinking the manager from USC was hired by the Browns and made some adjustments.

Obviously I’m not the only one that thinks Wallace isn’t Making the effort to catch the ball that is needed to keep his job!! He could have come back to the ball in Sundays game and saved an INT at the very least or possibly even scored a TD,,but he would seem to think himself beyond that concept! He won’t take a hit to make a catch!!! I miss Heinz Ward!! Heath Miller is better than Wallace will ever aspire to be with his attitude!!
