Batch to start; Steelers workout four

Posted by Teresa Varley on November 20, 2012 – 12:17 pm

Charlie Batch will start this Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, replacing Byron Leftwich who suffered a rib fracture against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night.

In addition receiver Jerricho Cotchery will miss the game with what Coach Mike Tomlin said are “multiple rib fractures,” suffered late in the Ravens game.

The team brought in four players for workouts on Tuesday, looking to add depth with the injuries, including quarterbacks Mike Kafka, who played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Brian Hoyer, who was with the New England Patriots, and former Steelers receiver Plaxico Burress and Derrick Williams, who was with the team in training camp.

“We’re looking at these guys with the potential to sign at least one at each position,” said Tomlin. “We have a myriad of things going on in terms of the health of our own men. The men that we acquire will fortify our depth in terms of us preparing to win this football game.”

Ziggy Hood is considered questionable with a lumbar spine sprain and will be limited early in the week, but could see work as the week progresses. Isaac Redman suffered a concussion against the Ravens, but has done well in the tests and could play on Sunday.

Antonio Brown worked out on Tuesday and will be limited in practice early this week, but is questionable, as are Marcus Gilbert and Troy Polamalu, who is expected to run on Wednesday. Ben Roethlisberger is considered doubtful with an SC shoulder sprain.

“He had an additional test done today and all things are very positive in terms of where he is,” said Tomlin. “We are encouraged about his status.”

For Batch having the week to prepare and know he is going to play definitely will make things easier.

“Having a week to prepare is a lot different versus coming in during a game,” said Batch. “As you go through a week to prepare you have the chance to talk about what you like, what you don’t like in the game plan and let it unfold during the course of the week.”

Batch said that even though he has been in the NFL for 15 years, he still gets excited by the opportunity to start.

“You do because they are rare,” said Batch. “The longer you are in this game as a backup you don’t know when it’s going to happen. You count your blessings and continue to move forward.”

glad to hear Batch is going to start. He should of been playing Monday night, I am still disappointed that Leftwich started. Batch has proven himself in the past being a consistent and solid back up. That was bad coaching from all those involved in the process!

Batch should have a good game on sunday,: our O line will have to open up yhe run game to keep Batch off the turf, if Dwyer is playing he should have a decent game if not fantastic. With the ravens at the Chargers sunday the Steelers may have a chance to gain a game on them.

I am very confident that Charlie will do us proud, he has proven his worth to our Steelers in the past when Ben was out and I feel he will win on Sunday.
I was disappointed that he did not start against the Ravens.
    GO CHARLIE
    GO STEELERS

Wouldn’t mind to see the Steelers try to resign Jerrod Johnson again. I think they’ll need two new backups next year (Byron is too fragile to be a reliable backup and this is likely Charlie’s last year due to age). Hoyer and Johnson would be two reasonable backups for next year.

you are right Kelly! ….Batch should”ve gone in Sunday, atleast in the 2nd half. We would be in first place right now….still plenty of time though. Plexi is a great bring back too!

I’m a life long Steelers fan from North Carolina. I was lucky enough to make the trip to see ‘em play the Browns on Sunday night football. This was in there 2005 Superbowl run. I was disappointed that Ben was out, but Batch blew Cleveland up, and the team didn’t miss a beat.

Yes it is good that they picked up another back up qb, and Burress should be a good fit. Of course Big Ben is the best fit for the Steelers, and yes we still have good opp to make playoffs and more…

GO CHARLIE, YOUR THE BEST AND GOOD LUCK! The old saying goes:
You can take the man out of Pittsburgh but you can’t take the Pittsburgh out
    of the man.

I was Batch all the way after Ben went down. Batch is our true 2nd string even at 37 … you da man. I’ve seen Batch move in the pocket and throw on the money down the field… a natural leader… Watch out Brownie’s and this time the Ravens are going down!!! Go Batch ! Go STeeLers!!!!!!

I will not second guess Coach Tomlin and Haley starting Leftwich over Batch. however I do wonder why we did not run the ball more often. Dwyer and Mendenhall were efficient when we did run. We will win the Browns game if we run the ball more than we did against Baltimore.
