Five ruled out for Sunday; Ben is fine

Posted by Teresa Varley on October 19, 2012 – 2:03 pm

Running backs Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman, as well as safety Troy Polamalu, tackle Marcus Gilbert and linebacker Chris Carter have been ruled out for Sunday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, however, fully participated in practice on Friday after a minor ankle injury in practice on Thursday forced him to miss the last few minutes.

“This is a lot of overkill for nothing,” said Roethlisberger when answering questions about the injury following Friday’s practice. “I knew I would be fine. I was fine. I just rolled it, nothing big.  It was good to get back out there and practice.

“It’s no big deal. I practiced today, am ready to go, I didn’t miss a play.”

Center Maurkice Pouncey (knee) is questionable for Sunday, while linebackers Lawrence Timmons (foot) and Brandon Johnson (hamstring) are probable and both fully practiced on Friday.

i bet if we played man to man defense instead of this zone blitz we could make it tougher for teams to comeback in the fourth quarter we arent getting the pressure we used to so the zone blitz is not effective.

regardless if we play man or zone, I belive we need to play more press we are giving recievers way too much room on the outside. Please oh please bring blitzburgh back this weekend I wanna see that red rifle on his ass! go steelers

My 10 YR old son sent me a text today at work very concerned that Big Ben was hurt and couldn’t play, actually more sad than anything!!! He was so happy to hear he is all good for the game Sunday night!. Your an animal Ben! Good Luck. We will be watching. And lets try and promote an injury free work environment, just too many of our Steelers are hurting! It might be easier to just sweep the orange padded sled out of the way!

Can the Steelers finally get their act together and win a road game for the 1st time this season. Just because Troy is out injured doesn’t mean the defense should fall apart in the 4th guarter and let another team beat us with a field goal.

@heath Brown…. Oh my God, did I truly read this.. I hate to say it Heath, but the Zone Blitz was created in Pittsburgh, its our Defensive Scheme for years now and what made us become the cream of the crop in Defense for years…Dick L. and his schemes are awesome and have been ruining Offenses for years. I agree that we could do something better at the end of games to stop offenses from coming back, but when I see prevent defense or a lack of blitzes…we fail, I think we need more pressure at the end and not less…and Heath…I understand we can put Ike out on an island with almost anyone out there…but let’s let Keenen and Co. mature a bit before we start putting them on man coverage and then blame them for a loss when they can’t cover someone that is a mismatch..Oh yeah, and don’t forget that we have been using back-up safeties all year…sorry, the comment just didn’t make sense to me…Go DEFENSE!!!

It’s been a rough start this year but most of us are still loyal fans who ride out the ups and downs. We’ll be watching and cheering at our house.
    Go Steelers!

This game in Cincy could make or break our season. This really is a must win game. The Ravens losing Ray Lewis and Lardarius Webb has really opened up the door in the division, but we can only get ahead of Baltimore if we start winning, epecially on the road. It all must begin in Cincinatti on Sunday Night.

I think the key to beating the Bengals will be our passing game. Big Ben has to deliver. We’re not going to get the ground game going with Mendenhall, Redman, and Gilbert out and Pouncey ailing. Big Ben and his wideouts desperately need to make big plays. We’ve been able to do it in the past. We need to do it again here. On the defensive side of the ball, the key will be shutting down Andy Dalton and not letting him come back in the 4th Quarter. No blown coverages or getting beat deep. We have to play solid defense and FINISH the game. If the Steelers can do both these things, I think they have a good chance of winning this must-win game.
