Not up to their standard

Posted by Teresa Varley on September 24, 2012 – 4:55 pm

Linebacker LaMarr Woodley knows what is expected from the Steelers defense, and he knows giving up 34 points – especially when the offense puts 31 points on the board – isn’t what the standard is.

“I know when our offense goes out there and puts that many points on the board they’re giving us an opportunity to win the game,” said Woodley. “It’s our responsibility on the defense to go out there and shut teams down, and we didn’t do that.”

Defensive end Brett Keisel echoed those thoughts following the Steelers 34-31 loss to the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, which dropped the Steelers to 1-2 on the season.

“If an offense scores 31 points you should win the game,” said Keisel. “We have to do better on defense to keep people out of the end zone.”

This loss will sit with the players a little longer than normal as they have their bye this weekend, before taking on the Philadelphia Eagles at Heinz Field on Oct. 7.

“We’ve got to chew on that,” said Keisel. “We’ve got to chew on it for two weeks. We’ve got to get better in a lot of areas on defense. I’ve got to get better. We’ll do that.”

At the same time, the bye could be an advantage, allowing the Steelers to get some players back, including safety Troy Polamalu and linebackers James Harrison and Stevenson Sylvester.

“We’ve got an opportunity to go into this bye week, have everybody rest up a bit, and come out and get ready to play some more football,” said Woodley.

What the Defense needs is change, the Zone Blitz Has been figured out we are getting Killed in the secondary. Remember a couple years ago when Dick said he had a dreamed about a new Defense, well Dick you need to put that dream into action. If anybody can right the Steelers Defense Dick can.

Thank you for taking the time to read my comment. First off I am a life long Steelers fan I am 40yrs old, started watching the Steelers at 5 yrs old, No infulence needed – I live in Tx – Houston. There was no infulence ..
My concern is that more and more Our Defense is allowing long runs right up the middle. I want to see more aggressive LB and MLB – and CB and SS closing this down with the Blitz. There is no reason what so ever that the Steelers with the caliber of team that we have – we should have lost 2x to a weak team – the Raiders. Our Defense has given up key big plays in major loses to Broncos and Raider more than 1x. Steelers Defense needs to pick up the pace. Ben threw 4TD and no INT’s – this is a game we dominated but the Defense left the Raider’s in the game.

I am a die hard steelers fan!! and have been all my life, I was born and raised in charlotte,nc. Even when we got a team (caroliina panthers) i still stuck with my steelers!!! never will give up on them. Our issues as a team is staying healthy!! we have more starters and key players hurt it seems like, more than any other team in the league. never the less the back ups are there for a reason. First of all it hurts to the core!! as a steelers fan to watch your team dominate a game, but can’t control the clock because our running game is struggling! at no point should we ever have to resort to passing when we controling the game that late!!. you are asking alot of your QB, and recievers and offensive line. Secondly our defense has got to get back to the basics of football!!! that includes wrapping up instead of arm tackling!, and just the basic stuff that we have forgotten now that we made it to the nfl!! But we will be back on top i have faith!!! Lets Go Steelers!!!!! Lets Go!!!!!!!!!

I think the saddest moment was Coach Tomlin going for it on 4th down in their own territory because he had no trust in the defense. When I see that the Broncos have struggled big time after playing the Steelers, the Raiders struggled big time before playing the Steelers, it’s very frustrating. The common denominator is the defense is just average now. I almost feel like the offense cannot make any mistakes (which of course they did) just to compensate for the defense.

I cant remember the last time we showed any kind of real pass rush through out the entire game. Our secondary wont get better until our pass rush gets better. I want to see Troy play up on the line when he comes back he’s a playmaker we need him blitzing some more. This front four needs to get going. I havent heard Keisel’s name called in a game all season. He’s an impact player that has to find the quarterback.

One thing the Steelers were excellent on defense was NOT giving up the BIG play. This year it’s obvious in both losses the BIG play has come on pass plays and run plays. Eliminate the Big plays and this defense and Mr,Lebeau should be good to go can’t wait for the Eagles game at Heinz Field. Big Ben has been sharp and consistent at the QB position I like what Todd Haley brings as a Coordinator he resurrected Kurt Warners career if Haley and Ben can stay on the same page this offense will be one of the best in the NFL.

I am a die-hard life lone Steelers fan, I had to get tough when I lived among my enemies the Ravens in Baltimore and now I am even tougher living here in Texas among these Cowboys fan.So I need to see the old Steelers attitude. Blockers need to get a mean nasty streak in them from the past history of our team. Hit them straight in the nose, till they are afraid to line up on the other side. I love you guys, but you are play TOO Soft!!!!! Go Steel Curtain…Take Pride in the History.

i agree with david if our offense and defense both get their acts together i dont think anybody could beat us. we need to play a whole game both sides. so far its one side or another come on boys you got the talent get it together!

I am Ganell And i am a Die Hard Steeler Fan Have been since i was 4. I was at that Game in Oakland, what i saw was a lack luster pass rush. It has always stater with a those outside linebackers being able to get to the QB. Sacks lead to turn overs Especially with Carson Palmer. WE all want James Harrison to come back but we drafted two guys that should be able to step in and produce results. We also need to play more bump and run like we did in New England last year. WE cant Cover 3 step drops with a 10 yard cushion. Finally WE got to Run the Ball More affectively. I thin Dwyer and Batch should handle that until Mendenhall gets back. I have no doubt no worry and no fears that we will get this fixed and make the playoffs. If there is a man who can light a fire under this team it is Mike Tomlin. Next Philly and Mike Vick. Lets Get some turnovers and put them away early. Here we Go Steelers…Here We Go!

Hey steeler fans i love to read the echos of my statements from previous days.As for the Steelers……i hope this loss leaves a bitter taste in your mouth, this way maybe ,just maybe you’ll learn from this, play football tough for 60 minutes and go far in the post season.Be well and rest up so you can prove me right against Philly.

dont know how most of you can call yourselves steeler fans and diss the D. seen couple of you say palmer passed all over us. did you even watch the game?
Palmer had 50 yards passin total wit 5 min left in 3rd qtr.. maybe blame st for the great feild position they gave oak. also oak woulda only had about 50 yards rushing if mundy didnt take a bad angle and gave up that huge run Troy wouldnt of allowed that also what about the plays called on D at the end? i rather blitz 11 then play soft and let them hit the check down on us all day for 5 yards every play.. i really wonder if half you even watched the game

Where is the smash-mouth defense we know and love? Pull yourselves together through this bye week and come back with a vengence. You guys need to get your heads together. You are right Lamarr. 31 points by the offense should mean victory. Especially against Carson and the Raiders. Come on guys!

I love you and will look forward to seeing us in the playoffs. Remember THE STANDARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have always been a Steelers fan. From Pop Warner to date. In my humbled opinion, I think that the philosophy of taking the best player in the draft rather than drafting by position needs to be amended. I think that with that Philosophy, MY BELOVED STEELERS, are about 2 yrs behind in looking for a safety. Troy is such an intricate part of the defense, that there is such a drop off when he is injured. Also, the LB are starting to get caught up in the wash more so. When coach LeBeau dials up pressure they are rushing the same gap and being bunched up. It’s time for FOOT-SPEED and sound tackling to be injected in to the DEFENSE!

No one fears our defense anymore! We need to get that back. HOW! By being the best each one of you on “D” can be. You have to be “OBSESSED” with getting to the QB and making the tackle for no gain.It begins in your head and trickles down into your body then to action! WE CAN AND WILL BE THAT DEFENSE AGAIN…JUST GO AND DO IT….WITHOUT THINKING….REACT, SEEK,,,DESTROY!!!!! GO STEELERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There was a pass interferene call on Pittsburgh on 3rd down in which there was LITERALLY no contact whatsoever between the DB and the receiver. Kept the drive alive and Oakland scored. Changed the outcome of the game.

i think defense needs to change maybe run a 4-3 i’d like to see them give it a try hood woods and hampton can play dt put woodley hayward keisel worilds on the ends maybe try robinson at the end spot he got good presure during the preseason idk we def need more presure on the qb though …love the steelers and there history of strong def we got keep that going to win super bowels!!!!

I was very upset with our defense.. especially giving up that many points, to the RAIDERS! however, its in the past and im glad were 1-2 and not 0-3.. Would love to see the old Lamar Woodley back also.. hopefully with the return of 92 and 43 our D will go back to normal.. if not, weve got a long season.. STEELERS FOREVER!!!!
