Coach Tomlin’s Post-Game Comments
Posted by on September 10, 2012 – 12:11 amOpening Comment: That is a tough defeat, as they all are. That was a tough, hard-fought game. Just in a nutshell I thought they made the significant plays in the second half of the football game, particularly down the stretch, really kind of in all three phases. We lacked the significant play, the game defining play. They made them. Obviously when that happens you are going to lose football games like we did tonight. We accept that; we acknowledge that. We have to get better and get better in a hurry. We have a new challenge facing us in about six and a half days.
Can you talk about the injuries to Ramon Foster and Marcus Gilbert?
Ramon had an eye injury of some kind. He is being evaluated as we speak. Marcus just hyper-extended his knee. Hopefully that won’t be serious. We’ll see.
Can you talk about the ability to possess the ball?
That was our intensions in terms of how we worked. We needed to possess the ball. We needed to get stops. Time of possession is just that. When you look at the scoreboard they got it done, we didn’t. The plan didn’t come to fruition.
Can you talk about the decision to challenge the play near the goal line?
I didn’t know whether the ball came out or not. They were in a hurry-up mode. You are not getting that information quickly in hostile environments. I thought it was worthy of a timeout right there to see for ourselves. Obviously he didn’t fumble the ball so they maintained possession and then they went in and scored.
Were you able to see it?
Someone did. That’s why it was given to me.
You ran the no-huddle – was that the plan?
We had planned to do that. Not specifically how it unfolded, but game circumstances change things sometimes. I was comfortable with the no-huddle attack and what we were doing in it, just not enough significant plays made particularly down the stretch.
Did their no-huddle cause you some problems?
We didn’t make significant plays, third down plays, plays that get you off the field. They did. They didn’t have many third down opportunities. I think they were five or six of nine, something like that. We just didn’t make enough football plays. You have to give credit to them. They did, they executed.
Peyton Manning has been away for a year. What did you think of his performance?
He is Peyton.

very disappointed in our loss against the Bronco’s today. Defense looking good..Troy is fantastic! I am so not happy with our quarterback. what is up with him. He is way too slow out of the pocket. takes too many chances with low throws to his recievers…accurate but way to big a chance when the other team could easily pick off those low balls. Now as to the sacks. 3 in a row in the 4th quarter? Really??? I think he holds the world record for sacks! i am sick of him…he was done 2 seasons ago..move on! please!
One more thing..not signing Hines wArd…huge mistake..HUGE!

Were were the Steelers tonight. They did not seem to show up. What happened to mike wallace. He was a non factor agian, the corerbacks could not cover a bed with a blanket. When are you going to get an offince that can protect Ben. Ben could go for the birth and no one on the field would knmow he was gone.

my do you guys seem to NOT have a short passing scheme.. With the Bronco pass rush, those 15 and 20 yd passes just aren’t happen’in.

As usual..MT makes no excuses…everybody must man up and make plays. Let’s not kid ourselves…Steelers have NEEDED an Offensive Line for at least four years…we were fortunate to win the Arizona Superbowl
By George on Sep 10, 2012 | Reply
Looked to me that some much needed conditioning is in order so they can play the entire 4 quarters.

When you can’t run the ball you don’t keep trying to run it, we have good receivers but yet you don’t use them. The coaching has to improve or it will be a long year,
By matt on Sep 10, 2012 | Reply
gary c, part of the reason why the passing attack worked the way it did is because of that same very run tactic you are trying to avert.
By Nick M on Sep 10, 2012 | Reply
Agree 100% with Gary. Don’t keep trying to run the ball constantly when it wasn’t working all game. We are a much better team than what we showed last night. Get after it this week in practice and come out strong on Sunday!!
By koulpeeplz on Sep 10, 2012 | Reply
Coaching wasn’t the problem. Nor were the run attempts. In fact I thought we could have run it even more with Dwyer especially on the goal line. The main problem seemed to be that we didn’t get enough pressure from our defensive line and because of that their run game got chunks of yardage and our secondary got exposed.
First game, one loss. I expect Coach Tomlin will have them ready next week for the Jets. Having James Harrison and Ryan Clark back in the lineup will be a nice boost for the defense.

Was the secondary even on the field? When a Broncos receiver caught a pass, a Steelers defensive back wasn’t even in the picture on TV. If they keep playing like this on defense, they will get torched every week. I hope they get it together soon or it will be a long season.

So we got rid of Arians (which I agreed with) king of the “Run,Run,Pass” and brought in Haley to give us the new and improved “Run,Run,Pass”. Stunning. With all of our pass weapons you could set up the run with the pass. Just sayin’.
P.S.- Our defensive looks old, slow and confused by everything. Last year they were just 1/2 a second off from getting those turn overs. This year it is a whole second. I love you guys, but…c’mon…where is the coaching.
By Dahlia on Sep 10, 2012 | Reply
I agree Gary C steelers paying this receivers why not use them
By Kevin on Sep 10, 2012 | Reply
I agree with Gary that the coaching has to improve and it’s got to start with Dick LeBeau. In case he hasn’t noticed, everybody has figured the zone / overload blitz scheme out and it’s not working. We’re not getting pressure and with our pathetic excuse for a secondary we’re getting burned. He better come up with a Plan B or the offense is going to have to score 30+ points every game for us to have a chance…

I agree at this point, not sure what to think about the coaching decisions. Dont want to have a long disappointing season, to much talent on this team to lose games.

I agree with Gary and Kevin, c’mon coaches.. lets get our stuff together…
Can we run an offense that doesn’t include 80% of draw plays.. or some half-way pass behind the line of scrimmage… PLEASE!! use the weapons you have… maybe you can try other things when Mendenhall gets back.. but for now… and how about using the back that runs hard and all out. Oh and Mike.. ya should have been with the team in workouts.. preseason practice/games… now way in hell your holding out didn’t hurt the team or your performance… thanks.
By Tom on Sep 10, 2012 | Reply
I think both LeBeau and Haley need to assess their game plans. The offense looked like it was from back in the 20′s and where is the fire in the defense. When will someone step forward to be a vocal leader on the defense like a Ray Lewis is for the Ravens. LeBeau better light a fire under the defenses butt or it will be a long season.
By RICK on Sep 10, 2012 | Reply
ITS ONE GAME, BUT ALL EVERY TEAM HAS TO DO IS RUN NO HUDDLE AND WE WILL LOSE EVERY GAME. HOW DO YOU HAVE HAMPTON IN THERE WHEN DENVER IS RUNNING NO HUDDLE?? DEFENSE WAS BAD, AND ARE SEEM TO HAVE DROPPED OFF QUITE A BIT. THOMAS? AGAIN? DEFENSE BETTER BRING THIER PRIDE TO THE GAME NEXT WEEK.

What are you talking about? The o-line is the issue… not Ben. Ben is the best thing about the offense right now. Our o-line can’t run block to save their lives. Troy didn’t look fantastic! He was irrelevant. The whole defense was porous all night which, along with NO pass rush, allowed Peyton to pick us apart. I love the Steelers but this is a mediocre team.
By Denise on Sep 10, 2012 | Reply
I see it the same way as koulpeeplz. Dwyer played with heart and soul last night!
By grammie6 on Sep 10, 2012 | Reply
blame the coach??? blame the quarterback and the offense! I have not seen the Steelers with a great offense in years. They can’t protect a qtback that is stinkingn slow out of the pocket….by the time ben throws the ball the whole offense can be there for ben…..Ben needs more speed, confidence…he is more hype than he is play. as far as the defense..they are awsome. altho not as great yesterday as most games…this is the start of the season..and Troy..do ur thing! U r great. nothing stops u. U made some fantastic blocks…love ur style.
By grammie6 on Sep 10, 2012 | Reply
I forgot to add that Dwyer is a tank! I love to watch him! He plowed thru the Bronco’s defensive line like a warrior…Keep it up…I am a total fan!
By chemsteel on Sep 10, 2012 | Reply
Dick Lebeau has let the game pass him by. He is 75 years old. The new offensive coordinators have figured out the zone blitz of the 90′s. We no longer have Levon Kirkland, Greg Lloyd, and Rod Woodson. It’s time for a new defensive coordinator or at least a new defensive scheme. We still have New England to play…and yes, they will spread our defense!!!!!!

where is the pressure?lets go D” outside linebacker were weak . our depth at defense has deminished, not the steelers D” Im accustomed 2.LETS GO STEELERS!

Cornerbacks cant cover,in order to pressure a offense u need good cover corners,
we did not address that this season.we need a losing season to rebuild this team ,when u win for so long and pick no better than 23 u cant build depth in ur organization ,hate to say it thats what we need.LETS GO STEELERS!

The no-huddle hurt us bad. We still can’t cover the whole field and now everyone knows it too. The Ravens are using the no-huddle now as a large part of their offense too, so we will being seeing that again. All teams will try to expose our secondary and if our front line cannot get any real pressure on their QB, we are in for a very, very long season. C’mon guys (coaches), why cant you make adjustments during the game too. We just keep on doing the same thing.

Ben I love him to death, coach some of the things that happen were amazing ,and some were not .Rest ben if time permits. defense injures played a factor but Being the one denfense we didnt look it couldnt stop the run at all. Hold your heads up guys we got a long way for the superbowl . dont worry we’ll get there 2013 baby yea.

1st game of the season, in a packed Bronco’s stadium with the Payton Manning story all everyone was talking about, no Ryan Clark no Harrison and we get yet another offensive line injury in the 1st half and we still dominate the time of possession and give ourselves a chance to win with 3 min in the game…Bring on the Jets and lets close this Chapter as both Payton Manning and Tim Tebow beat us in Denver….Bring them to Pittsburgh and see how they do with Ryan Clark in the lineup!!!!!!!!

Our offense looked pretty good for our first game, you need to keep running to get the play action going! As for all the people talking about our O-Line,in case you haven`t been paying attention we have had some devastating injuries which are part of the game. I see the problem being our defensive planning! Even the Ravens with their great defense have made changes to keep up with the times!! Dick LeBeau`s scheme has been studied and copied and reviewed so much that every team in the league knows it inside and out! I`m sure Peyton Manning saw something to go no huddle and LeBeau made no meaningful adjustments to stop it! Also it REALLY hurts not having Ryan Clark and Harrison out there! We need to figure out why our O-Line keeps getting hurt more than any team in the league, and all the injuries kill us every year! It`s a good thing we lost to Denver last year because we would of had to use the waterboy and people in the stands to finish the season!! Keep you chins up guys! I`m sure we will be there at the end when it counts, and someone please tell Dick to change some stuff up our D is too predictable anymore!! GO STEELERS!!!!

Overall, it was a great effort, considering who was missing out there (Harrison, Clark and Mendenhall). Offensive plays too slow in developing and were not set up sufficiently (e.g., you can’t just run a reverse and expect them to be surprised.) Ben was great with the fakes, it would be better if to force the cover guy to make a decision. The most effective runs were the change in direction plays, so they obviously study the films and know your plays (this can be used to your advantage). Need to time the passes better, receivers are only open for a second or two. We need to devise schemes to get better pressure (e.g., delay blitz). Need to jam up the short routes.

The They should have won against the Broncos. The defense needs to step up it’s act or it will be a long season. They need to use the no huddle more and pass more. I am worried when they play the Ravens. The Ravens tore up the Bengals real good. If the Steelers play like they against the Broncos they will get killed. Come on LaBeau and Haley you can do better.

Lets not get carried away, Its not how you start its hpw you finish. Lets review this subject again in December. Let em coach, If we were so smart we,d be coaching and not bitchin BLACK&YELLOW!!!!!

Lots of good points here….Polamalu was irrelevent….Peyton had him totally accounted for by changing the plays depending on where he was lined up. Great to see that running back Dwyer seemed to be the only one playing with energy, enthusiasm…….where is that energy on defense? Want to know what it looks like?……should have watched the Ravens-Bengals game…..#1 defense last year?……c,mon STEELERS…….BRING IT !!!
