A wish comes true for young Steelers fan

Posted by Teresa Varley on August 29, 2012 – 4:07 pm

As soon as the horn signaled the end of Steelers’ practice on Wednesday, Brandon Brawdy’s smile was a mile wide, but nonetheless the 15-year old looked slightly overwhelmed when he saw the entire team heading his way.

It was a moment he had been waiting for since his family contacted the Make-A-Wish Foundation after he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer almost a year ago, sharing with them his love for the Steelers and wanting to find a way for him to meet some of his favorite players, in particular defensive end Brett Keisel.

“It’s an amazing honor,” said Keisel. “First off that they can have one wish in the world and it’s to hang out with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the day. That’s a remarkable honor for this organization. For him to want to meet me is incredibly humbling. It means a lot to me.”

Keisel, Coach Mike Tomlin, and all of the players spent time signing autographs, posing for pictures and visiting with Brawdey, who came with his family from Piedmont, South Carolina, for practice and the team’s preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.

“This has been almost a year we had this in the works,” said his mother Terry Brawdey. “The smile…he loves the players, he loves the Steelers. For the whole family to be able to do this trip has been great. We never know…we take one day at a time. You never know. We just have to enjoy every moment we can.”

Thank you to the entire Steeler organization for being so kind and generous to my nephew Brandon and his family. This entire experience means the world to him. Thank you all for what you have done for him. I can not share with you enough how “The Steelers” have brought him through some of the toughest days of his life. When he is in the hospital, his room is wall to wall Steelers! After his first major surgery, the first time I saw him smile at me was when I handed over to him my prized Terrible Towel! The positive, uplifting impact that this team has on him, I honestly believe, helps him in his fight against this horrific cancer. Again, the most heart felt thank you.

I knew I loved the STEELERS for a reason. You have made my grandson a very happy young man . My Steeler love goes all the way back to Bradshaw, Greene and many others including Coach Knowell. Toml;in is doing a great job and Big Ben are great and Troy is something else. He can navigate that fiels like no one I have ever seen. Keep it going #43. Thank you all for the wonderful experience you gave to Brandon.

I can not say enough about what the Steelers and Brett Keisel have done for my son. It was a trip of a lifetime and every single player and coach took the time to talk to Brandon and sign a ball for him. James Harrison even took time away from his family to meet with him. This was a couple days we will always be grateful for!! Ya’ll are the best!!!
