DeCastro to have surgery

Posted by Teresa Varley on August 27, 2012 – 7:21 pm

Rookie guard David DeCastro, who suffered a significant knee injury against the Buffalo Bills Saturday night, will have surgery on Wednesday.

“I have no update on David DeCastro,” said Tomlin. “He has surgery scheduled. I’ll update you guys after the surgery.”

Tomlin said that teammates were disappointed for DeCastro, the team’s number one pick this year, after the injury which could have him sidelined for a while.

“The guy is injured and you feel sorry for him on a personal level,” said Tomlin.
“Professionally, we understand that this is as much a part of the game as blocking and tackling. So, we move on.”

DeCastro’s teammates said he was upbeat when he was at the team’s practice facility on Monday, and when asked about that Tomlin joked about the quiet, reserved DeCastro.

“Well, those of you that know DeCastro, know that upbeat for him is a stretch,” said Tomlin.

I was looking forward this year for him to play this year.I know the O-Line has been a weakness for the Offense of side of the ball for awhile. I wish him the back of luck and a full recovery!

David…toughness is not measured in success. It is measured in how you rise from being knocked down in life and overcome adversity. Be courageous and know that being a Steeler is not the easy road traveled. The ’79 Steelers did not give up despite injury. They rose to be Champions…this is the legacy they left you! God Bless.

Tough break, he needs to be strong and let this thing heel. We have been in this situation before but, we didn’t have a player be great when he’s back on the field. Work hard and we will see you in the future.

He was doing really, really well. It is a big shame that he went down so early and not even playing a regular season game. Hope he has a speedy recovery!

Do those of you saying we “need” him to play want him to play if he can’t walk? Holy cow. Let the guy heal. Hopefully he has a long career ahead of him.

He’ll be back. MCL’s are normally a 6 week recovery and then rehab. So were lookin at just in time for the playoff stretch along with Rashard in the mix too.

The dislocated knee though may be extra so your talkin at least 2-3 months. But right in time for the playoffs.

David, I sustained a spinal cord injury when I was 27, it has been over 30 years. The most important lesson I learned from that was, the surgeons can put you back together, but only we can determine our path from there. Your future is bright, with the only limitations those you place upon yourself. From all accounts, you are a strong and determined young man. I expect you will come through this challenge more determined and stronger than ever. I am looking forward to your return to the Steelers O-Line. You are in my prayers for the Lords blessings on a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.

    Onward and upward, fight on!

God bless you and your family!

    Go Steelers!

Sad to hear for him, but as a steeler fan our history of starting rookies isn’t done with prescedent and I believe with his sense of pride it will only strengthen his work ethic to a new level. Guards seem to be unstoppable with the right chip on their shoulder.

I was heartbroken when I found out that David sustained this injury, wow! I know I speak for the SteelerNation when I wish him a quick and successful recovery. The only thing that will help relieve our disappoint in losing David at this point, is our first victory of the season in Denver. Let’s do this Steelers!

David Decastro will be alright, with God on his side, he will be back, to play football. Don’t rush it, other teamates, have to step up on the offensive line. It’s 53 men on the football team, we have Hall Of Famers, and the Pittsburgh Steelers are Champions.

Lets be thankful it is not worse, acl not damaged, and who knows what would have happened….D can still learn from the sidelines and save some rookie wear and tear, and perhaps avoid some rookie mistakes that would have gotten Ben hurt.
….sorry..I think like a chess player!

David heal up and keep learning, Steeler Nation is behind you!!
