Coach Mike Tomlin
Steelers-Colts Post-Game Comments

It was great to finish a game. I liked the efforts in all three phases. We had splash plays from guys in all three phases. We needed to take a significant step in terms of production and degree of detail in our work and I think we did. I’m always excited about the win but don’t misunderstand me, though, there’s a lot to be corrected. That is a part of August football for us but it’s good to make those corrections while you win. I thought the turnovers defensively were big. We created a splash in the special teams game with the blocked punt. I didn’t like our return game. I thought our return game was below the line. We need to get better in that area. Offensively, we created necessary plays, particularly down the stretch to put points on the board. Obviously, we’d like to score more touchdowns than field goals but we’ll take it. Hopefully it will be a good learning experience for us as we move forward. On the injury front, I think we got out of the game relatively clean, which is good news as we move forward this time of year.

Did you see progression by the first-team offense?
I did and not only the first-team offense, but everyone. It was better. We challenged them more with what we asked them to do. They did a relatively good job. Again, we’re still working, individually and collectively. That’s all part of it. I did think they took a step today.

Were there any concussion symptoms for Rainey?
I didn’t examine. I just go with the doctors. They said he was fine to come back so we played him.

Re: Creating more turnovers:
We’re just trying to play ball and play winning football. We play hard enough and good enough technically and assignment-wise that turnovers are going to come.

Re: Players who just got activated from the PUP List:
We’re just starting the process for them. We’re at the point of rehabilitation where playing football is part of that rehabilitation. We’re going to do that with them. Whether or not they participate this upcoming week or the week after, we’ll continue to live day-to-day. Those guys were at the point where football needs to be part of the rehabilitation and that’s why we took them off PUP List.

Dwyer may turn out to be the featured RB. Will be interesting to see which RB does not make the roster. Looks like Mendenhall, Redman, Dwyer and Rainy for sure make roster.

I like what Haley is doing. He’s eating up clock! I’d like to see #22 Rainey coming outside and catching the ball where he has room to run. It was nice to see them try to use him in the return game, but that was when we blocked the punt. Also, our defense will look better when our starting DEs are getting more pressure and we are coming after the QB, but there were glimpses. Great work by Brown running and catching. I see growth and potential! Way to go.

I love that Haley is the OC .. under Arians there was a blocking scheme that was a mess. Why did he change Grimm’s blocking (man) to zone ? he will screw up the Colts. Good Bye for ever Arians ….Haley’s offense will be more balanced and Ben will be even better.

I was dissappointed in the red zone efficiency. If this does not inprove, we will not make the playoffs. Andrew Luck picked apart the defensse after his innetial bad start. There is a tremendous amout of improvement to be done. Hope it can be accomplished.

WE PROGRESSED ONLY A LITTLE UNDER ARIANS. I TOO AM GLAD WE ARE BACK TO SMASH MOUTH RUNNING EVEN WHEN THEY KNOW IT ..FOOTBALL!!
WE HAVE PLENTY OF QUALIFIED RUNNING BACKS…SO LET’S USE THEM!

Jerrod Johnson is the future QB of the steelers… is a great great player, is big, fast, intelligent, strong, is the required alternate for Big Ben and our future QB…what I saw yesterday impressed me very well, hopefully Tomlin and the Steelers have been equal.

I was really impressed with gilreath, ford, and jarrod johnson. Those three really stood out to me in the colts game. If they continue that kinda play I hope pittsburgh keeps those guys they could become huge unknown assets. Specially ford he really reminded me of a young jerome bettis. ive always had aliking to the stocky power runningbacks we have always had the most success in the runninggame with those type of runningbacks. Gilreaths play could help ease the pain of the wallace situation if he continues improving on his already great play from last nights game. And jerrod johnson looked really good last night and his youth and speed as well as his awareness are great assets to have in a back up. Dont get me wrong I like batch and leftwich but they gettin up in age and slowin down we need that young mobile backup like we had in dennis dixon. Hope we keep all three of these guys.

Glad to be back to punch-you-in-the-mouth football. This will take pressure off Ben which will, in turn, keep our OL healthy. This may very well strike fear in the heart of many,…….and I love it!

I did not saw the game but anything Haley does over what Arians used to do will be an improvement. I still think Jonathan Dwyer should be the chosen RB now that Isaac is injured and, even with a healthy Isaac, Dwyer should get the ball. He has played little but, when played awhole game he showed he can carry the load.

I didn’t think they were very good at all. The Colts just flat out pushed the defensive line around. We are not getting to the passer, which means we are headed to the same fate as last year – stops on downs 1 & 2, burned long on third. One of the turnovers was just lucky. That should have been a Colt TD.

One bright spot on the line is McLendon. He looks terrific. Hood, Keisel and Heyward all need to step it up a bit. Our linebackers? Somebody should have told the healthy ones that there was a game last night. Adrian Robinson looks like he wants to play and with three hurt, he just might.

Offensively, DeCastro looked better, but Adams looked lost. It’s going to take a while for him to adjust to the NFL. His baptism came against two fast ones, but he looked OK on runs. Once again, we don’t score a TD with a first down inside the five.

I love the draft and the players coming in. But, all of these young players are still a cut below the elite players they can be. They need seasoning. The defense scares nobody, and man, do we miss a healthy Harrison.

Harrison, Smith, Hampton, Gay, Farrior, Mendenhall, Keomatu, Starks, Wallace and definitely no Clark in Denver. With our injuries and cuts and retirements, we could be starting as many as ten new guys game one. That’s not a good sign. Hang in there fans, this team’s future looks bright, but much brighter next year.
